Yes, that's a python. They are considered sacred in Voodoo. We were at the sacred temple of the pythons in Ouidah, which was also the major slave port of Benin.
Kristen, I'm really impressed with that snake around your neck! I HATE snakes and have yet to see one close, outside of a car here, so let's hope it stays that way. :) Your pictures are beautiful so far!
In May 2008 I graduated from Michigan State University with a dual degree in International Relations and Social Relations and Policy with a specialization in International Development. On July 1st, I will be moving to Benin for the next 27 months as a Peace Corps Volunteer. I'll be teaching secondary school English and hopefully getting into lots of other random projects around my community!
